DEVELOPMENTS AT
THE CONSERVATORY OF PUPPETRY ARTS(COPA)

Novermber 1, 2002 - our first newsletter

Since the beginning of July, 2002, the following has been accomplished thanks to our executive committee; Alan Cook, John Waite, Greg Paul Williams, Phil Moyer and Jackee Marks and our fabulous and conscientious volunteers; Gayle Schluter, Evey Brown, Sharon Moyer and John Leland. We also wish to thank our CalArts interns, Marcella and Cath'a and our volunteer, Diana for their excellent work. Hired interns from CalArts (Tracy Otwell and Marcela Oteiza-Silva. Tracy returned to school and was replaced by Cath'a Pagotto in October).

Documentation of puppets - to date, over 1200 puppets have been photographed and documented Wrapped and stored puppets (17 cartons).

Received contribution of Sharp copier from Jim Gamble.

Partnered with Robinson Park - July 6 - early August - three days per week to give 3 teens, (Sergio, Cruz and Jenny) a work experience (wrapping puppets, learning to be docents, learning shadow puppet manipulation).

Prepared puppet exhibition for Bradley Terminal, LAX and the Ontario Airport, (including documentation, photos, and written information), one of the first collaborations between the Cultural Affairs Dept., city of L.A. and the L.A. World Airports "Selections from the Alan G. Cook collection, 1860 - present "- this exhibit is now on view to travellers.

Received video, "Portrait of Artist Alan Cook" , prepared by Laurie Maclin for Kern County Schools.

Represented at Councilman Nate Holden's block party, Sat., August 10.

Gift of 13" Memorex video/vcr from Evey Brown.

Reception for puppeteers at Regional Festival, Asilomar 8/25/02.

Designed new brochures and new buttons for membership campaign.

Installed air cooler in office.

Donation of photography and rehearsal space from Tony Urbano's shop through the generosity of Tim Blaney.

 

Received 18 theater seats and office furniture from Disney Studios through L.A. Shares,

Hosted LAGOP event featuring Ann Salt, a designer from the Lion King.

Part of L.A. County Arts day at the Armory NW Received approx. 200 visitors for Pasadena Art Night, 10/11/02.

Documented and packed over 400 puppets (22 cartons) for exhibition at the Grace Hudson Museum, Ukiah, "Puppets of the World from the Alan Cook Collection " (Dec. 7 -April 27).

Selection of toy puppets to be included in "Sweet Dreams-Children's Toys, Clothing and Quilts,1850-1950), Pasadena Museum of History, January 18 - May 28, 2003.

Ongoing Puppet entry and photos in Filemaker Pro.

Inspect and repair puppets as needed oPack puppets and store.

We are in desperate need of display cases to protect and exhibit the puppets.
