DEVELOPMENTS AT
THE CONSERVATORY OF PUPPETRY ARTS(COPA)

April 19, 2003 - our second newsletter

A number of notable exhibitions from the International Puppetry Museum collection have been mounted since mid 2002. Two exhibitions have been on view at airports under the authority of the cultural arts department, curated by Scott Canty, City of Los Angeles. A collection of about 60 puppets was featured at the Bradley Terminal at LAX Airport for a six month period, ending in March. Ongoing are 12 cases of puppets at the Ontario Airport. The Grace Hudson Museum, Ukiah, in Mendocino County has been featuring over 200 puppets. This exhibition, curated by Marvin Schenck will be closing the end of April. Closer to home, at the Pasadena Museum of History is the exhibition, "Sweet Dreams", children's toys, quilts and clothing from 1850-1950. The most recent exhibition, opened on April 5 at the Craft and Folk Art Museum in Los Angeles. Puppets belonging to prominent Los Angeles puppeteers and puppet collectors are on view. Other activities include puppet shows and workshops are scheduled.

Executive Director's Message
I had a terrible dream. It was a nightmare! I was in a big enclosure. It was crowded with people. They were pushing and shoving as they grabbed for puppets. They were taking arms full of puppets, our puppets! The collection was being dismantled . The puppets were crying out, "Save me!, Save me!"?

It was only a dream but what a tragedy it would be if this marvellous collection was no longer available as a resource to the Southern California community Sixty years of work and dedication would be lost.

Puppets speak an international language. Puppets apply to history and art , education and therapy. They have been used in most cultures as a form of communication of ideas and worship.

It is the mission of COPA to preserve and restore this collection. Once the puppets have been organised and properly stored, COPA will be able to concentrate on outreach programs that blend performance, exhibitions and education.
