DEVELOPMENTS AT
THE CONSERVATORY OF PUPPETRY ARTS (COPA)

May 6, 2003 - our third newsletter

COPA has signed a lease at 980 N. Fair Oaks Ave. Start using this mailing address now. The phone # will remain the same. An open house in the fall is in the planning stage. As soon as we are moved, we will resume processing the puppets and do more exhibits.

Conservatory of Puppetry Arts LOSING HOME AT ARMORY NW!

You don't appreciate something until you lose it! Through the largess of the Armory Center for the Arts, COPA was provided with 5000 square feet of space at the Armory NW. After two and one half years in this location we must vacate the building.

We at the Conservatory Of Puppetry Arts (COPA) are extremely appreciative of our stay here. It has made it possible for us to process over 1500 puppets from the collection of the International Puppetry Museum. Many groups and individuals have been able to tour the facility and learn about puppetry from collector, Alan Cook. A large selection of puppets have been featured in a number of exhibitions throughout California. Still on view are exhibitions at Ontario Airport, Pasadena Museum of History and the Los Angeles Craft and Folk Art Museum. The public has the opportunity to view some outstanding puppets from around the world.

The prospect of moving puts us in a panic! It is imperative that we locate a new home. Finding one will be a great challenge. Moving, an even greater one. We have started a search in the greater Los Angeles area for at least 4000 square feet of space in a secure building, Our budget is limited, therefore finding something suitable will be difficult.

It is the belief of COPA members that the use of the puppet collection for viewing, teaching and performance can enrich the community. It is our hope that we find another Pasadena location so that we might continue to provide access to the puppets.

A final public event in the 965 Fair Oaks Ave.building will be held on June 8 from 2pm until 5 p.m. Films of Janie Geiser, director of the Cotsen Center of Puppetry, CalArts will be featured. There will also be a puppet exhibit, a puppet making workshop and other puppet related activities.

Conducted tours of COPA can be arranged by appointment as time allows.

Information about a possible space will be greatly appreciated. COPA can be reached at (626)296-1536 or mail@copa-puppets.org
