PUPPETS ON THE MOVE!
PUPPETS AT HOME IN NEW COPA HEADQUARTERS

A series of fall events provides an opportunity for puppet fans of all ages to visit the new headquarters and learn about the Conservatory of Puppetry Arts (COPA), located in the American Friends Service Committee Headquarters, 980 N. Fair Oaks Avenue, Pasadena.

On Thursday, October 9, COPA will present their first tour to a group of 50 art lovers, the Blue Ribbon Circle from the Bakersfield Museum of Art at the new COPA facility. The Bakersfield ladies will be treated to an all inclusive tour including the office and exhibition area, work and photo space and storage room. Among the puppets they will see are marionettes of famous people such as Bob Hope, and old and contemporary puppets in all styles and parts of the world. They will enjoy a video. "Portrait of Artists - Alan Cook" prepared by the Kern County Superintendent of Schools. They will also learn out about the art of restoration and conservation of antique puppets.

COPA volunteers will reunite with the Armory Center of the Arts NW Friday, October 10, the annual Pasadena Art Night. It will be held at their new location, the former Hortus Nursery, 284 E. Orange Grove Blvd. COPA members will share the art of puppetry with the Pasadena community by providing a simple horse marionette making workshop.

The public is invited to a COPA Open House on Saturday, November 8 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00: p.m. It will give the public an opportunity to tour the new facility. Featuring puppet related activities.

 

 

The following Saturday, November 15 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. the American Friends Service Committee is sponsoring a Community Festival and as new tenants, COPA will reprise their marionette construction workshop as part of the celebration.

Executive Director Jackee Marks, curator Alan Cook and the COPA board and volunteers were thrilled to relocate the more than 3,000 puppets and articles of puppet memorabilia to a delightful new space in the American Friends Service Committee building just across the street from their old location. The move was hot and labor intensive. Now settled into the new space, COPA members have become are enthusiastic about moving forward.

 

 

The Mission of COPA is dedicated to promote preserve and to advance the international art of puppetry. COPA will support and > enrich the diverse communities of southern California through outreach programs that blend performance, exhibitions and education.
